Ultrasound

Ultrasound is a non-invasive and harmless way of imaging organs within the body using sound waves. It is best used for examination of the abdominal organs. Ultrasonography is most accurate when an experienced user is performing the examination using a good quality machine. In addition, owners will get most out of combining an ultrasound scan with the advice of a medicine specialist who can advise on what further tests or treatments might be necessary.

A special type of ultrasound technique is used to examine the heart and is termed “echocardiography”. With this technique we can examine the flow of blood through vessels and valves and examine the way the heart contracts. An echocardiogram can give a lot of detailed information about heart disease and is often combined with other tests such as radiographs of the chest or electrocardiograms – all of which are available at the VSC.
