Dr. Tony Black graduated with Honours from The University of Sydney in 1974 and travelled to Canada to complete his post graduate small animal surgical training. After working as head of soft tissue surgery and the Animal Medical Centre in New York, he returned to Sydney to open his specialist small animal surgery practice in 1981. This practice was incorporated into the VSC in 2007.

Tony Black has a special interest in the diseases and surgery of the canine hip (having completed over 450 total hip replacements), arthroscopy, spinal surgery and urinary tract surgery. He is the superintendent and the Head of the Surgery Department of the VSC.

Dr. Tony Black was awarded The Small Animal Practitioner of the Year Award by the Australian Small Animal Veterinary Association in 1994. He has been the Chief Examiner of the Membership and Fellowship of the Australian College of Veterinary Scientists and has lecture widely in Australia.
